Q: How much does it cost to make a podcast?

A: Ah… how long's a piece of string?! We've found that every podcast is different for a number of factors so we ask clients to consider the following to determine cost:

What's the format e.g. round table chat or magazine show requiring creative/scripting?
Approximate duration of episodes (edited)?
Number of episodes, if known
Presenter required?
Hosting and Distribution required?

Perhaps you require 'record only' or 'edit only' service which we're happy to provide.
We will also work around your budget to deliver the best solution.

Q: How do you record a podcast?

A: Depending on your budget you can either record in a professional studio, at your place of work (e.g. in an office) or at home. If you're not in studio, you will ideally have a good quality microphone for each contributor. The Podcast Company will provide these for location recordings (along with a sound guy) and will even courier microphones to client's homes.

Recordings are usually made directly onto a digital storage medium - i.e. the studio computer, a memory card in a portable recorder or via an online studio platform.
There's a variety of recording equipment and online platforms to choose from - if you are looking to record this way…

Q: How easy is it to record a podcast from home?

A: Anyone can set up and record from home with a little patience and the right equipment.

Firstly, you'll need a good quality microphone. There are many inexpensive models to choose from that will plug straight into your laptop. We'll gladly share a few options with you...
You should also set up in a quiet space with as many soft furnishings in it as possible - such as curtains, carpet and bedding rather than hard surfaces. A bedroom is better than a bathroom! This is to absorb excessive sound.

Next, decide on a recording medium. Will you record directly into your computer? A portable device? Or an online platform? Whatever you decide to use, make sure to use multi-track option if there's more than one contributor. This makes audio processing and editing A LOT easier.

You can then send the individual audio files to us for editing.

Q: Can I record a podcast with guests anywhere in the world?

A: Yes!
Using online platforms such as Zencastr and Cleanfeed, it's now possible to hook up with guests wherever they are in the world.
We strongly advise testing the connections before any recordings and using good quality USB mics where possible.

Q: What is a podcast producer and what do you do as a podcast production service?

A: A podcast producer will pull the whole project together and oversee every stage of production. Depending on your requirements, these will be:
- pre-production which includes initial creative ideas, formatting, scripting and technical set up
- recording in studio, on location or via online platform
- post-production which includes audio processing, editing, adding voiceovers, music and any other elements
- delivery to hosting platform and distribution

At The Podcast Company, we can help with all or just some aspects of production; from pre-production through to distribution.
As every project is different, it's best to give us an idea of what you have in mind so we can crate a proposal and costing that's bespoke to you, giving you the most efficient and cost-effective solution.

Q: What equipment do I need to start a podcast?

A: Very little! You can begin recording with just a good-quality USB microphone but you may want to include a recording device (for location recording).
Online recording platforms mean you can use your laptop to record and store audio files locally before sending to us for editing.
Should you wish to edit yourself, you will need a sound editing suite. There are some freebies out there (like Audacity) that are great for learning. Editing and audio processing (cleaning audio) take time (and good software) to get right, though; this is why clients often pass their audio to us for edits.

Q: Can you distribute my podcast once it’s created?

A: Yes, of course. We will set up a hosting account, help with logo creation, advise on the best way to structure your show notes, metadata/keywords and discuss with you the realistic frequency of output (once a month? twice a month? weekly?)

We will then feed the podcast to all major apps such as Apple, Spotify, Google and Amazon and even create promotional assets for you to use such as audiograms and audio snippets.

Q: What podcast recording services can you provide?

A: We can record in one of our Soho studios, at your place of work (e.g. offices, or even outdoors!) and we can also record remotely so you don't need to leave your home - we will even equip you with a good quality USB microphone to achieve the best possible audio quality.

We can record as many guests as you like although generally recommend no more than 3 plus a presenter.

Q: How do I promote my podcast?

A: Once a podcast episode is made, we strongly advise creating promotional assets such as audiograms and audio snippets that can be used on social media channels to drive traffic to the full episode.
Social media and reaching out to existing contacts (via an email list, for example) remain the most effective ways of building an audience without additional expenditure.

Should you wish to invest in further marketing, you will need to consider advertising (through other podcasts, for example) or engaging the services of a dedicated marketing manager.

Q: Can I create a private podcast?

A: Yes.
Podcasts don't need to be shared on public apps such as Apple & Spotify. You can create content that is for a select group of listeners, such as your staff, colleagues or friends.
To do this, you will need to choose the right hosting platform that enables private hosting. Or have the website manager upload it to the website's own server.

The podcast can then be shared via a private link or embedded into a private/intranet page on your website.
